Do you know what the definition of “overwhelm” is? It’s actually quite eye-opening. The definition is:
“to bury or drown beneath a huge mass”
Take a second and let that soak in.
Have you ever felt that way? Like life, emotions, work, motherhood…whatever it is, is smothering you? Like you are being buried in a trench and you just can’t seem to find a way out. Or maybe you feel as though you are drowning in a sea of emotions, paperwork, life in general.
Overwhelm is real. It’s definition is slightly terrifying.
Overcoming the Overwhelm ~ Narrow Focusing
I remember (not too long ago, a few months ago, actually), feeling that way. Feeling like I just could not climb out of the burial of mom-guilt, complete and total overwhelm.
It was my reality. One that I’m not proud of, but, it was what it was. For some odd reason I had come to accept that fact that I was overwhelmed, that I could not change this for myself. When really, I could.
I didn’t know how to make life “easier”. I didn’t know how to balance work and life. I didn’t know how to overcome the seemingly difficult times in my life. I was without a life strategy, and I needed to do something, and do it NOW.
That was when I reassessed everything. What are the things in my life that are 1. A HECK YES! and/or A HECK NO! When I started eliminating things, people, events, projects, that were no longer serving me or my family, I found that I could slowly begin digging out of the overwhelm. It was like I could breathe again.
From that, came another amazing eye-opening concept.
Narrow focusing is a simple, but sometimes difficult to grasp, idea and strategy that you can implement RIGHT NOW! And I’ll tell you how and why.
Think of a hunter in the woods, hunting his prey. He doesn’t go out into the woods to shoot his gun at everything that moves. NO! He hunts during a specific season, a specific time, for a specific species. He sits and waits for hours upon hours, in stillness, anticipating his prey to step into his view/gun range. And when that animal does, he narrows in on it. He slowly takes his gun, quietly aims, and pulls the trigger.
So much application here. When we narrow focus in our lives and in our work or business, on 1 thing at a time (one project, one task, etc) and give our all, overwhelm begins to lift. When we focus on 1 big program that is truly going to move the needle in our business, or we fully focus on client calls and listen to each individual need, THINGS START TO HAPPEN. Life becomes easier, we become present, and natural, organic movement becomes a thing versus feelings of drowning and burial under a huge mass.
This is what I invite you to do…
I invite you to first, assess your life. Find the things, the people, the events, the projects, whatever it is…find what really speaks to your heart. Your desires. Pursue those things and set everything else aside, as long as it is that which allows you and your family to flourish and to live abundantly.
And then, laser focus on those things. Be completely narrowed in and give your all. Take each individual instance one step at a time. It makes ALL the difference in the world.
